India has just announced that they have built a prototype laptop for $35. They don't have it in production yet but are talking with lots of interested manufacturers. Once in production they believe they can get the price down even further.
Electronic components have been coming down in price for several years, some of them are so cheap now that a skilled do-it-yourself-er can build their own computer for less than it would cost to buy one. And if you think the skill is difficult, it really isn't.
There are lots of resources on the internet that teach step-by-step computer building. There are also instructions for building lots of other electronic devices as well. So, if you are good with your hands, and short of money at the same time, why not build your own computer. Once you build one the rest will go much more quickly and you could probably make money by selling them.
